How much do you know about Windows 7 upgrading? Solve this month's Windows IT Pro Update Reader Challenge, and you might win a prize!

Take the September 2009 Reader Challenge:
It's the end of the summer (in the northern hemisphere), and all those tasks and decisions labeled, "Take care of this after Labor Day" are now in my face. I thought I'd do an easy Challenge to extend the "relaxed summer pace" I've been enjoying (a couple of hours every day at the pool, watching the Phillies almost every night, etc.). This challenge is based on Microsoft's Upgrade Chart for Windows 7. Can you answer these questions?

Question #1: What color is the path for "In-Place Upgrades" to Windows 7 instead of new installations?
A. Blue
B. Green

Question #2: Which row on the chart is for a product that doesn't exist?
Question #3: If you're running Windows 7 RC, can you do an in-place upgrade to the retail product?
A. Yes
B. No

Question #4:
(This is an "extra credit" question, so if you answer the three previous questions correctly and get this one wrong, your answers still go into the "correct answers" bin.) What is the best description of the Upgrade Chart for Windows 7?
A. Confusing
B. Ludicrous
C. Hilarious
D. All of the above

How to Play:
Email your solution (don't use an attachment) to challenge@windowsitpro.com by September 28, 2009. You MUST include your full name, street mailing address (no P.O. Boxes), and a telephone number. Without that information, we can't send you a prize if you win, so your answer is eliminated, even if it’s correct.

I choose winners at random from the pool of correct entries. I’m a sucker for humor and originality, and a cleverly written correct answer gets an extra chance. Because I receive so many entries each month, I can't reply to respondents, and I never respond to a request for an email receipt.

Look for the solutions to this month's problem right here (http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=102846) on Oct. 20.

August Reader Challenge Winner:
Congratulations to David A Sweatt, of Oregon, the winner of our August 2009 Reader Challenge. He wins a copy of Head First Networking from O'Reilly Media.

Answers to the September Challenge:

#1: B – Green

#2: The row for Windows Vista Starter 64-bit, which doesn't exist. (Actually, if you live in the United States or Europe or in many countries in other continents, there's no such product as Windows Vista Starter at all; the 32-bit version (the only version that exists) is only sold in "developing nations".)

#3: B - No. You have to back up all your data files, perform a clean install of the retail version, and reinstall your applications (and apply all the updates for those applications).

#4: D
