An Alternative to Windows Vista

My company's Windows 2000 Professional (Win2K Pro) machines are nearing the end of their usefulness, so I know we have to migrate soon. However, after hearing about all the problems everyone has been having with Windows Vista, I haven't been looking forward to it. I thought that Vista was our only option—that is, until I did some research.

I had read that the first service pack for Vista was released for manufacturing ("It's Official: Windows Vista SP1, 2008 Head to Manufacturing," InstantDoc ID 98196), so I went online to find more information about it. I was hoping I could at least migrate right to Vista SP1, thereby avoiding some of the problems my sys admin friends were facing. My search, though, revealed something totally unexpected. By sheer happenstance, I stumbled across a nonpublicized announcement few people know about.

Following the lead of the Coca-Cola Company, Microsoft has announced it will again offer Windows XP, under the name of "Windows XP Classic." (For those of you too young to remember, back in April 1985, the Coca-Cola Company released a new formula for its mainstay product. There was such a backlash that by July of that year, the company started selling its old formula again under the name of Coca-Cola Classic.)

Apparently, the cries of discontentment with Vista haven't reached deaf ears. So, despite the release of Vista SP1, I'm going to wait for "Windows XP Classic." This is great news!!! Microsoft needs to follow the same suite with Server 2008 as well. That is one of the biggest boxes of crap since Vista. M$ should make XP and 2003 work properly instead of forcing new crap down our throats. It costs industry untold mega-dollars each time M$ releases new stuff. In fact, most companies haven’t recovered form the XP and 2003 upgrades. Then to force Vista and 2008 down our throats very shortly after - as well as Exchange 2007 (another box of crap) is just bad for business and the economy. Then again, M$ has more money than the economy so how would they know anyway. I say just fix the good stuff and we can all get on with making money for “our” stock holders and not just make more money for M$ stock holders. But what do I know. I've only been dealing with this stuff since the early 90's and make my living form it now.

Most people should remember that XP had the same reception as Vista. Like many people, I hated XP when it came out. Now I can't stand working on someone's 95 or 98 box, although W2K is still OK with me. One thing's clear, if your brand new "loaded" pc/laptop runs like crap because of Vista, somthin ain't right. Thanks to Dell, we still have an OS option.

I am not a fan of April Fool's Day in any way shape or form. I get particularly aggravated when I spend my valuable time reading an article only to find that it was an April Fool's joke. Worse still is that some people don't read far enough to determine that it is a joke. They simply go away thinking the misinformation is true. Please do not include such "jokes" in the future. They are not funny.

When I first started reading this article in the mag I thought 'Great, an alternative to Vista, about bloody time', but then I saw the articles author, and I became sadly depressed again! If ANY Microsoft people read the article, then please, please, take up the idea! Windows XP Classic would be so much better than Vista. Personally we're waiting for Windows 7, so we can migrate straight from XP to that and by pass Vista altogether. To the editors of WindowsITPro, if you're going to run April fools, please make the article smaller, or more humourious so that its an obvious joke. I think too many people will take this as a legit article, and get their hopes up, as no one really notices/bothers to read the article authors!
