Idera has released PowerShellPlus 3.0, the latest version of its interactive development environment for Windows PowerShell. "We listened very carefully to the feedback of customers and incorporated their suggestions into this new version," said Rick Pleczko, Idera president and CEO. Feedback was obtained through several venues, including the Beta Place and Wish List forums on PowerShell.com.

One new feature that's a direct result of customers' feedback is the QuickClick Library. This feature lets users put their favorite PowerShell scripts and commands in a Windows Explorer-style tree, where users can organize them for easy access and execute them. But perhaps the best part of the QuickClick Library, especially for people new to PowerShell, is the inclusion of prepackaged scripts and commands for performing common tasks in Windows, Active Directory (AD), IIS 7.0, SharePoint, VMware, Microsoft SQL Server, and MySQL. "These scripts will help users learn PowerShell through osmosis," said Pleczko.

In the Windows area, there are scripts and commands for managing printers (e.g., working with printer devices), computers (e.g., listing hotfixes), hardware (e.g., obtaining physical memory information), networks (e.g., retrieving network logon properties), and storage (e.g., mapping drives). The automated AD tasks include adding groups, adding users to existing groups, getting users' group memberships, and retrieving organizational unit (OU) properties. If you're responsible for SharePoint, IIS 7.0, or VMware servers, you can use the prepackaged scripts and commands to retrieve site methods and properties from a SharePoint site, add new IIS 7.0 websites, retrieve VMware virtual machines (VMs) and hosts, and more.

There are also prepackaged solutions for performing common PowerShell tasks, such as listing all the available commands grouped by noun and listing all cmdlet aliases. In all, there are about 100 prepackaged scripts and commands. You can get a complete list by clicking the Download the Code Here button at the top of the page.

Besides the QuickClick Library, PowerShellPlus 3.0 features:

  • 64-bit support. PowerShellPlus is now available in a 64-bit version, giving users access to PowerShell snap-ins developed for native 64-bit Windows applications, such as Microsoft Exchange 2007 and SQL Server 2008.
  • Code sharing. Users can now search and download scripts from the PowerShell.com and PoshCode.org libraries. They can also submit their own scripts to the PowerShell.com library directly from the PowerShellPlus Editor.
  • Visual Basic support. Users can now use the PowerShellPlus Editor to edit and run Visual Basic scripts.
  • PowerShell 2.0 support.
