Looking for wntipcfg.exe

I recently heard that the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit and the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Resource Kit contain a GUI-based TCP/IP configuration utility that's similar to winipcfg.exe, the IP configuration tool in Windows Me and Windows 9x. I've installed both resource kits, as well as the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit Supplement 1, but I can't find the utility anywhere. Does this tool really exist, and if so, where can I find it?

The rumor you heard is true: The resource kits contain the Graphical IPConfig (wntipcfg.exe) utility, which Figure 1 shows. You can use this tool to view extended TCP/IP protocol configuration information for various network adapters and to release and renew DHCP IP address leases. The problem is that the resource kits' Setup utility doesn't install the tool by default. (The Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Resource Kit also includes the utility—as Michael Otey describes in Top 10, "Resource Kit Graphical Tools and Utilities," May 2000—and also fails to install it by default.) What's more, the Win2K resource kit supplement doesn't contain the file, so those users who have only that version are out of luck. (Why Microsoft develops great tools, then omits them from installation routines and removes them from later resource kit versions, is beyond me.)

To use wntipcfg.exe, you need to install it manually from the resource kit CD-ROM. The wntipcfg.exe file resides in the CD-ROM's netmgmt.cab folder. To install the tool, double-click netmgmt.cab, locate wntipcfg.exe, and copy it to the directory of your choice. I recommend copying the utility to the \%systemroot%\system32 directory (e.g., C:\winnt\system32). Then, to run the utility, simply type

wntipcfg
