Connections 2008: What If You Ran Microsoft?
POST A COMMENT

There's not a person in the IT industry who hasn't daydreamed about what it might be like to sit in the CEO's chair at Microsoft. (Except Steve Ballmer, of course. He's already sitting there.)

So we decided to ask some Connections 2008 attendees what they would do in the same situation as part of our "If I Ran Microsoft..." video contest. Here are a few of the more interesting suggestions taken from the WinConnections show floor:

"If I ran Microsoft, I'd change the help. Right now I don't find it very helpful! We need more examples of code." -- Jim Davis

"If I ran Microsoft, I'd go back to the command line and stop using the GUI interface!" -- Anonymous "If I ran Microsoft,I'd sell it, quit, and retire!" -- Matt Dobson

"If I ran Microsoft, I'd discontinue Vista!" -- Anonymous

"If I ran Microsoft, I'd reboot!" -- Melissa

Check out the clip below for more suggestions from IT pros taken at the first day of the WinConnections conference.

The "If I Ran Microsoft..." video contest runs from October 20 to December 31, 2008. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will be chosen by editors from Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine.

Connections 2008: MTM Software and SysCompare
(1 Comment)
POST A COMMENT

Despite the size and reach of mega-vendors like Microsoft, IBM, VMware, and Symantec, the IT industry is filled with thousands of small, independent vendors that provide innovative solutions to annoying IT problems.

Such is the case with MTM Software and their SysCompare family of products. If you've ever needed to compare system configurations between desktop and server PCs, SysCompare may be worth a look.

I met with MTM Software at Connections 2008, and spent a few minutes discussing the product with Mark B. Cooper, the company's president and CTO. According to Cooper, SysCompare is the first family of products to "dynamically scan and report on the software and hardware differences between Windows PCs."

Cooper explained that SysCompare supports an unlimited number of clients and servers, and automatically detects and reports on configuration differences between them. The tool reports on a wide variety of system configuration information, including device driver versions, system hardware components (including BIOS and memory details), printers, OS properties, installed patches and hot fixes, and dozens of other criteria. The screenshot below displays the SysCompare Pro hotfix comparison screen.

We're planning a full review of SysCompare Pro for a future issue of Windows IT Pro, and we'll post the review online first.

Win Connections Products: StackSafe Test Center
POST A COMMENT

I spoke with Jonah Paransky, VP of StackSafe, out on the vendor show floor at the fall Win Connections 2008 conference. The StackSafe appliance and software enables Windows IT Pros to test an application in a virtualized environment before rolling it out in a production environment.

The tools in StackSafe are designed specifically for IT Pros, who typically have to use test tools that aren't well suited to them, Paransky noted. Test tools usually run on the application as it's being developed and don't always take into consideration the problems the app will encounter in everyday use.

Check out the podcast where Paransky gets into the nitty-gritty of how this product works.

At the Connections conference StackSafe announced a new customer, Hearst Corporation, will be using StackSafe for email application testing.

For more on using virtualization for testing production software see Michael Otey's article Using Virtualization to Test SQL Server Express and Alan Sugano's article Server Virtualization Basics.

Connections 2008: Opening Keynote
POST A COMMENT

Several editors from Windows IT Pro and SQL Server Magazine are attending the WinConnections and DevConnections shows in Las Vegas this week. Both events are being held at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, and both run from November 10th to November 13th.

The opening keynote for both events was held last night, and consisted of two parts. D. Britt Johnson, product unit manager for data programmability tools at Microsoft, began with a discussion called "SQL Server 2008 - What's in it For You?". The second half of the keynote was headlined by Steve Riley, Senior Security Strategy at Microsoft's Trustworthy Computing Group. Steve's portion of the keynote was entitled "How IT Will Change in the Next 10 Years - And Why Should You Care."

Johnson's discussion highlighted several of the most significant new features of SQL Server 2008, including new geospatial mapping features and the ability to quickly implement data-driven processes that could be of use to small businesses. Microsoft's Gert Drapers and Goldie Chaudri demonstrated how those features could be combined to generate actionable business intelligence for a hypothetical coffee shop.

Steve Riley's discussion was more strategic and forward-looking, and highlighted the big changes business IT will see over the coming decade. From the rise of social networking to the consumerization of IT, Riley argued that a whole host of changes will impact how businesses deploy and use technology. Some of the discussion veered into the impractical, but Riley's thought-provoking presentation gave attendees plenty of things to think about.

Keep checking our DevConnections and WinConnections blogs for ongoing news, blog posts, and photo galleries from the show.

Observations on Connections 2008 and Mark Minasi's Keynote on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2
POST A COMMENT

I arrived in Las Vegas yesterday for the Connections conferences. We editors often call this show the mini-TechEd because it brings together IT professionals and developers who work with Microsoft technology. The November Connections show is actually a collection of co-located conferences. Windows Connections, Exchange Connections, and Unified Communications Connections are aimed at IT professionals. Microsoft ASP.NET Connections, Visual Studio & .NET Connections, and DotNetNuke OpenForce ‘08 Connections target developers. SQL Server Connections and SharePoint Connections encompass both developer and systems administration topics.

Aside from the topic overlap and a few common speakers, the similarities to TechEd stop there. As one of the speakers pointed out to me today, “The Connections shows have more third-party content. So the speakers are not obligated to present the Microsoft message.” They dive right in to the technical details about Exchange, Windows Server, SharePoint, Vista, SQL Server, .NET, and so on.

Take Mark Minasi, for example. Mark had just returned from TechEd EMEA and was overflowing with information about Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. In his keynote this morning, Mark started with practical details such as Windows Server 2008 R2’s improved power management and Dynamic Driver Provisioning and didn’t stop for the next hour. Mark pointed out that Windows 7 will ease the pressure to upgrade hardware because Microsoft has committed to supporting drivers that work on Vista. If you’ve upgraded your hardware for Vista, you can use that same hardware to run Windows 7. You can read more about Windows 7 features in Paul Thurrott’s report from PDC 2008.

Mark intends to post his Windows Connections keynote presentation on his web site. You can also read Paul Thurrott’s take on Server 2008 R2 here.

Mark asked the audience about their adoption of Windows Server 2008, and I was interested to see that only a handful of attendees had adopted Server 2008. I’d be curious to know how representative this audience is of the wider Windows IT Pro readership. Comment on this article to let us know where you are in the adoption cycle. Have you moved to Windows Server 2008? Will you wait for R2? Or do you have no plans to migrate any time soon?

As for Vista, about half the audience has used Vista. However I don’t believe they had rolled the desktop OS out to their organizations in large numbers. What about the rest of you out there? Will you be upgrading to Vista or waiting for Windows 7?
