Connections 2008: What If You Ran Microsoft?
- Posted by: Editors
There's not a person in the IT industry who hasn't daydreamed about what it might be like to sit in the CEO's chair at Microsoft. (Except Steve Ballmer, of course. He's already sitting there.) So we decided to ask some Connections 2008 attendees what they would do in the same situation as part of our "If I Ran Microsoft..." video contest. Here are a few of the more interesting suggestions taken from the WinConnections show floor: "If I ran Microsoft, I'd change the help. Right now I don't find it very helpful! We need more examples of code." -- Jim... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE.

VMworld 2008: VMware ESX 4.0 Coming Soon?
- Posted by: Jeff James
Alessandro Perilli over at Virtualization.info authored an interesting blog post before the start of VMworld 2008, including some speculation on his part that the next-generation of VMware's ESX hypervisor -- ESX 4.0 -- may possibly be announced at the show. VMware did reveal some information about new ESX features during VMware CTO Dr. Steve Herrod's keynote on Wednesday morning, including some of the features that Perilli speculated would be in the next revision of ESX. Here's a partial excerpt from ... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

Tech Ed 2008--Microsoft IT Eats Its Own Dogfood
- Posted by: Sheila Molnar
Had a great conversation at Tech Ed with Barry Briggs, the Director of IT at Microsoft, about a classic Microsoft topic—eating your own dogfood. Basically, Briggs’s internal IT group runs prerelease versions of Microsoft products and files bug reports and provides other feedback. Microsoft has a history of putting prerelease software into production use at the company to work through tough problems at the enterprise level. Briggs says that the politically correct way to describe this internal testing is “the first and best” program. But everyone just calls it “eating your own dogfood” or... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. All A'Twitter about Blackhat/Defcon
- Posted by: Tony Howlett
So I finally decided to join the new millennium and try Twitter.  I have managed to resist the social networking technologies so far (other than this blog).  I don’t do Facebook, nor Myspace (I have serious privacy concerns with them) and most of the other technologies struck me as inane or huge time wasters.   Well through the constant nagging of a friend, I’m on twitter now and I can attest that I was right.  It is a huge time sink.. but it is lots of... Troubleshooting a Slow-Running Windows Server 2008
- Posted by: Alan Sugano
We are in the middle of a major upgrade project for a new client. The client has two VMware ESX host servers running a variety of virtual server guests, including two domain controllers (DCs), File Server, Exchange Server 2007, SQL Server 2005, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) 2007 and Terminal Server.   All servers are running Windows Server 2008 as the base OS with a mix of x86 and x64.  All the servers were prepped for an initial Exchange cut over last Friday.  Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, we completed training on Exchange and SharePoint for the client and the servers ran flawlessly. ... Interop News: Datacom Unveils New 10Gb Data Filtering Taps and Switches
- Posted by: Jason Bovberg
At Interop, Datacom Systems announced the launch of a new line of affordable 10Gb data-filtering link aggregation TAPs and data access switches. The new devices provide test and monitoring access for 10Gb networks, improve monitoring efficiency and optimize network resources particularly for decentralized environments such as remote offices or anywhere departments and autonomous groups need efficient access to network data. “Many of today’s new solutions are geared toward centralizing monitoring resources,” said Datacom Systems' Chris Koeneman. “While in some cases centralization can be ideal theoretically, we find that many... Flip Your Script
- Posted by: Christan Humphries
There’s nothing I like better than a “flipped script.” I’m good—actually great—at figuring out what is going to happen. I can read the clues in social situations, usually figure out what our organization’s corporate office will do next, and even deduce the ending of most any movie. So when someone comes along and surprises me, I have all that much more respect for them. And in a tough job market where you have to show that not only can you do the tasks you’re hired for but also anything else the company throws at you, it helps to have some skill surprises up your sleeve. Make sure your... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

Affected products include the JScript Scripting Engine, Wireless LAN AutoConfig Service, Windows Media Format (WMF) files, the Windows TCP/IP stack, and the DHTML Editing Component ActiveX Control. Security Steps: Restricted Groups Policies
- Posted by: Orin Thomas
Restricted groups policies allow you to control the membership of sensitive groups through Active Directory rather than through traditional group membership editing tools such as Active Directory Users and Computers or PowerShell. The benefit of using restricted groups policies is that group membership is reset each time group policy refreshes. Thus the next group policy refresh will reset a group’s membership to an approved list if, for some reason, a user is added to a sensitive group where they should not have been. Restricted Groups are configured through the Restricted Groups node of a Windows Server 2003 and Windows... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

Self Paced or Instructor Led Training
- Posted by: Orin Thomas
There are two basic ways of studying for certification. You do it all yourself or you go to a class. Before I go any further I’ll point out that I write Self Paced Training Kits for Microsoft, so there is a bit of an incentive for me to push one method over the other. On the other hand, I’ve also run instructor led courses. Anyway, now that that is out there, on with the post… Each type of study suits a particular person. If you simply can never find the time to study out of hours, or you need someone to give you a bit of a push when it comes to motivation, going to a class can be your best option. Some people simply need the routine... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE.

Outlook 2010: A One-Hour "First Contact"
- Posted by: Curt Spanburgh
In anticipation of the upcoming release of Microsoft Office 2010, as a Microsoft MVP I recently got the opportunity to take a trial run of the new version of Office. The upgrade went fine on top of Windows 7 Ultimate. But the first stop in the application suite was going to be the place where we all spend a great deal of time: Outlook. Here are my impressions of my first contact with Outlook 2010.Even though I upgraded from Office 2007 to Office 2010, I still had to re-create my profile. When Outlook first... Microsoft Contemplating a Purchase of RIM?
- Posted by: Michael Dragone
Rumors surfaced this past Friday that Microsoft is contemplating a purchase of BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM). I first saw this juicy tidbit mentioned in Paul Thurrott's WinInfo Short Takes: Week of Septembmer 3 (InstantDoc ID: 96953). Soon after I read Paul's piece, I noticed that Computerworld had entered the fray with an article detailing the rumor, including comments from industry analysts. This particular rumor... Data Robotics DroboPro Unboxing
- Posted by: Jeff James
Data Robotics introduced their first Drobo storage array in June 2007, and it was aimed squarely at the Macintosh market. The idea behind Drobo was to simplify the often inscrutable configuration of traditional RAID storage, which often leaves even the most technically astute IT pros scratching their heads. Should your storage array be configured as RAID 0? Or RAID 0+1? Or what about RAID 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6? And do you need block-level, distributed, or interleave parity? Storage-savvy IT staff may know this information inside and out, but Data... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT

VMworld 2009: VMware looks to virtualize mobile phones
- Posted by: Michael Otey
In Wednesday’s VMworld 2009 keynote Steve Herod discussed VMware’s plans to extend virtualization into the mobile phone space. While at first it seemed odd to me to virtualize such small iron after seeing the demo I saw how it could be useful. Virtualization could be used to give your mobile phone multiple personalities. For instance, one personality could be for work and another could be used for home. Each personality complete with their phones number and customizations. In the demo Steve and his demo partner Mike demonstrated using mobile phone virtualization to seamlessly combine applications from different mobile... READ THE ENTIRE POST HERE. MAKE A COMMENT
