On April 26, I set off tremors in the PC industry with a short, simple post in my Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) 2005 blog. Apple Computer, I wrote, was "unhappy with the PowerPC production at IBM and will be switching to Intel-compatible chips this very year." The article was met with skepticism, and I received a lot of queries about the claim. The Macintosh-fanatic community reacted most violently, accusing me of inventing the story and needlessly dredging up a years-old rumor.

Today, "The Wall Street Journal" is reporting that Apple and Intel are in talks to move the Mac to an Intel-based platform. Although neither company corroborated the report, "The Wall Street Journal" noted that it has multiple sources for the story (as, incidentally, I did for mine). "Two industry executives with knowledge of recent discussions between the companies said Apple will agree to use Intel chips," the story reads. "One of the two industry executives said Apple isn't likely to market OS X for other PCs. Besides hurting its own hardware business, such a path would put Apple in more direct competition with Microsoft, whose application programs are important to the success of the Macintosh. Instead, the company is likely to package its modified software with its own Intel-based hardware."

Apple almost moved to Intel's chips in the past. The first attempt, in 1992, was dubbed Project Star Trek because it would have taken computing "where no man has gone before." Apple backed away from the project, however, because it would have drastically reduced the company's hardware sales, a primary source of Apple's income.

"The Wall Street Journal" reports that Apple could make the Intel announcement as soon as June 6, when Apple CEO Steve Jobs will present a keynote address at the company's developer confab, the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) 2005. Officially, however, Apple refers to the possibility of moving to Intel as "rumor and speculation."

Smart move by @pple!.
PowerPC chips are only good for gaming. You can see that from the next consoles. For some reason M@c can't even do that well. They are only good for email. Welcome to a real processor.

Welcome to a real processor? Intel uses about 150% more power (about 70 watts) and the chip contains several more millions of transistors than the PowerPC, yet PowerPC can beat the best of Intel at many calculations. Britney Spears is very popular too, doesn't make her a real singer.

Welcome to the dark side.

I hear Apple OS X 10.5 will only run on an x86-64 compatible CPU. All that overpriced Apple junk you bought will have to be replaced (which is a carefully thought out plan by Steve Jobs to test how stupid you all are).

Intel could easily produce PPC-type chips FOR Apple. The establishment of Power.org and the release of patents by IBM and others would make it doable. I seriously doubt that Apple would abandon the PPC RISC model for x86 CISC as it would open a can of worms. What is far more likely is Apple buying Intel chips for future versions of the iPod, adding WiMax, integral Cell Phone capability to it's laptops, or some new accessory.
Bottom line-- Apple will be doing more business with Intel, but will NOT be replacing PPC with x86.

Wow, Paul, you're completely wrong. This article is embarrassing.

"On April 26, 2005, I set off tremors in the PC industry with a short and simple post from my WinHEC (Windows Hardware Engineering Conference) 2005 blog"

You hardly "set off tremors." Dvorak said the same thing, and Intel rumors circulate every year. Get over yourself.

Apple has already denied the report, so you may want to update your article to reflect that (and to remove your arrogance):

http://tinyurl.com/blpxf

http://tinyurl.com/cwhbx

http://tinyurl.com/dsn7y

It's stuff like this that makes you look foolish, but the icing on the cake is your self-gloating over "setting off tremors," as though Intel rumors on the Mac are something new that Dvorak didn't already write about this year and that don't resurface every year.

Apple uses Intel chips in other things, such as the RAID controller in the XServe, and they had ARM in the Newton.

Sigh.

"The post was met skeptically, and I received a lot of queries about the claim. The Mac fanatic community reacted most violently, accusing me of inventing the story and needlessly dredging up a years-old rumor.

There's just one problem: It's true"

Just one more problem--IT'S NOT! Apple has already denied the report.

Once again, Paul Thurrott illustrates his arrogance. Let's see how long the article stays up even though Apple has already discredited the Wall Street Journal report!

Looks like Mac users continue to have the last laugh when it comes to Paul's Apple "news." Go ahead and set off those "tremors," lol. Dvorak's Intel piece is the one everyone is talking about, not Paul Thurrott's little blog post.

Anonymous User May 23, 2005 (Article Rating: )

wait, so paul trumpets himself as delivering a rumor that appears every year (and dvorak has written about countless times), claims it is true, but then at the end says "Officially, however, Apple refers to the possibility of moving to Intel as "rumor and speculation."

uh, am i supposed to believe paul thurrott over apple? is apple lying?

what happens when june 6 comes and goes with no intel announcement? will paul admit his error?

Mac Users, switch to Windows now. You see, we have had the power of x64/86 for quite some time now. Looks like you will have to wait. You can make the switch now and start computing with real power.

I poop in the mouth of the guy that posts "Yawn" on every story. How does my sh1t taste?
