Microsoft announced this morning that, to reduce criminal exploitation of children, pornographic spam, and other inappropriate uses, the company will shut down its free MSN chat rooms in Asia, Europe, and Latin America and will limit the service in Brazil, Canada, Japan, and the United States. The changes will take effect October 14, according to Microsoft, and will affect all the countries in which MSN is available. Executives from the company noted that in recent months, as most legitimate users have moved from chat rooms to Instant Messaging (IM) for online chat, chat rooms have increasingly been filled with inappropriate content for children.
"We recognize that [this inappropriate conduct and content] is a common industrywide problem," MSN's Lisa Gurry said. "We've taken a look at our service and how we can make efforts to step up our efforts to provide a safe environment ... The change is intended to help protect MSN users from unsolicited information such as spam and to better protect children from inappropriate communication online." The company's decision to change its chat strategy comes in the wake of a sharp increase in high-profile cases worldwide in which sexual offenders and other miscreants have lured children and other people to meet in person after chatting online.
In Brazil, Canada, Japan, and the United States, MSN's chat rooms will stay open, but users will need to participate in at least one paid MSN service, ensuring that Microsoft has users' credit card numbers and other personal information on file in the event of abuse. Microsoft currently provides local MSN content in 33 countries and 17 languages, and the company says that more than 200 million people use the service worldwide; more than 1.2 million people access the MSN chat rooms.

Cheers to Microsoft for this move! It is a definitive, well-thought out action, and i believe the company has taken the right step to do what it can to combat this problem. Applause! Applause!

MSN offers Subscribers Chat as an INTEGRAL PART of it's marketing packaging, ANY alteration of this packaging will be a 'Bait and Switch' [criminal fraud?] action. Politics Chat rooms [for example]are not intended for 'Children'as they are too young to vote. Tampering with Fundamental Freedom Of Speech Rights is unlawful and invites Class Action Lawsuits against MSN for abuse of citizens rights. I would suggest to MSN to quit tampering with basic Human Rights and Freedom while operating inside of American Borders, or be preparred to face the consequences in appropriate court action due process.

I feel that the concept of making chats safe is a great one, however, I am a mother of 4 children and I do not have a credit card to pay for any services rendered by MSN or anyone else. I pay my bills on time and always pay by check or with cash...I know alot of other people do not have credit cards either and feel that I am being punished for another mans crimes if these measures are taken by MSN.I look to MSN chats for friendships, comfort in my life , but most of all , laughter to ease my worries. Please reconsider your decision and find another way.I will lose contact with many wonderful ppl i have met over the years and it will make a HUGE negative difference in my quality of life ....thank you for listening Cindy Meeks

IT'S NOT FAIR TO TAKE MSN CHAT AWAY FROM THE PEOPLE THAT DON'T ABUSE IT BUT CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY FOR IT.IF YOU CLOSE MSNCHAT I WILL LOSE CONTACT WITH ALL MY CHAT FRIENDS,AND AS A HOST I KNOW THIS WILL HURT MANY PEOPLE LIKE THE OLDER PEOPLE THAT COME TO CHATROOMS FOR JUST SOME NICE CONVERSATION. THE BIGGEST PART OF PEOPLE THAT COME TO CHAT DO NOT COME TO PREY ON THE INNOCENT. PLEASE DO NOT CLOSE MSN CHAT

Absolute total rubbish.

MSN is moving their chat services to a subscription-only service. They are not shutting anything down. They needed a PR coup to minimize the backlash of users and the spectre of child exploitation online seemed like a good one.

As many people who have worked for MSN monitoring chat services can attest, Microsoft managers don't give a jot about child protection until they can make it a public relations plus or they are forced into it.

Whereas Microsoft's actions in the past merely affected us in the IT industry, pulling these kinds of claims on ordinary folk is just sickening.

If there is exploitation of children it will now be continued on a subscription based service.

Dear Microsoft and MSN,

I have a specail needs chat room for parents with handicap children. What is wrong with that!! I have never allowed bad language is my chat room. Why not just pull the ones that promote the uncalled for behavior and chat and leave us parents that need to communicated with the outside world and other parents who go throught the same thing I do every day with their handicaped children. Please do not do this to us only punish the ones that need to be punished..
Thank you

Well, I have read all of the other comments and I agree with most. I feel that it is the parents responsibilty to monitor their children. As a mother of 3 I do believe I have the right to make that assumption. My children arent allowed online without me sitting there monitoring their movements and they are definately not allowed into chat rooms. Children have no reason or need to be in chat rooms. I can understand the need to do research for school or to even play some games. I feel that its the parents fault for allowing their children to do as they please and they should be held responisble not the innocent ppl using the service. I also do not have a credit card and absolutly will NOT get one just to use msn chat. I feel that this is an attempt to just make more money on msns part and has nothing to do with the "best interest" of the children. As far as the adults that go and meet strangers off the net and end up being assulted or killed... well... all I can say about that its their own fault. If they arent smart enough to realize that chat isnt real life and that people do lie and are in some cases sick and sadistic then I don't feel sorry for them in the least.

Bridgette September 25, 2003

Although I agree that something needs to be done about the problems with chat, the porn spamming and the pedophiles... this is NOT the answer. What MSN has either failed to realize, or just didn't bother to mention.. is that the same people causing the problems will gladly pay the $20 a year to continue in their ways!
