Microsoft Issues August Security Fixes

Microsoft issued just one new security fix yesterday in its August collection of security bulletins. The fix is a security bulletin that has a moderate severity rating and affects Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5. Just one fix is a far cry from July's monthly updates, which included eight bulletins. Two weeks ago, however, Microsoft released a set of Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) fixes out of sync with its monthly security updates; the fixes patched IE flaws that were discovered in June.

"The Microsoft Exchange Server security update for August 2004 addresses newly discovered issues with Outlook Web Access technology running on Exchange Server," the company said in a statement. "Systems administrators who have servers running the listed affected software should download the update and install it." In addition, Microsoft rereleased an older security bulletin that includes a fix for a flaw in Interix, an older UNIX interoperability product that the company has since replaced with Windows Services for UNIX (SFU).

As always, Microsoft's monthly security updates are available on the Microsoft Security Web site. For more information and the free downloads, see the Security Updates for August Web site.
